EL PASO, Texas – University Medical Center said on Friday it had just received 5,000 new doses of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine that it plans to distribute soon at a new mega-site being installed at the Coliseum in County of D ‘El Paso.
“We have received 5,000 doses, they have arrived. We will reopen registration,” said UMC spokesman Ryan Mielke.
Registration was open at noon Friday on UMCelpaso.org for people in state immunization categories 1A and 1B, which include healthcare workers, first responders, anyone 65 and over, or others. suffering from certain underlying health problems.
But Mielke said all online appointments were filled within 12 minutes and the website registration was now closed. There will be no walk-in vaccination at the Colosseum, he added.
The new doses replace 5,000 that the UMC administered in tents set up at the hospital earlier this week.
El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego, speaking at a press conference Thursday night, first referred to the Colosseum’s distribution plans once additional vaccines were obtained.
“This transition will be very important. The message that the mayor (Oscar Leeser) and I received is that the faster we are able to get things done, the better and more efficient we are – the more likely we are going to get more vaccine.” Samaniego told reporters.
The 5,000 additional doses of UMC follow a shipment of 5,000 doses the El Paso health department received on Thursday. Like UMC, the city of El Paso had used up its previous 5,000 vaccinations this week with a distribution at a mega site it had set up near the airport.
“We are recognized as one of the best counties here in Texas that is advancing in the distribution needed,” Samaniego said. “We hope things go faster.”
