UNC faculty pushes for mandatory vaccination policy for students and staff :: WRAL.com

– On Wednesday, UNC faculty members will push for a vaccination mandate on campus at a special meeting.

Staff do not think that requiring testing is enough. They want to push for everyone on campus to be vaccinated.

The UNC faculty executive committee said staff were concerned about the growing number of cases.

Currently, there is no vaccine mandate in place for students or staff at UNC. At Chapel Hill-based UNC Health, all staff and doctors must be vaccinated to continue working there.

Unvaccinated students must be tested for COVID-19 every week.

Hundreds of schools, including Duke University, require vaccines from at least some students or employees. The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that more than 600 colleges and universities across the country require injections for at least some students.

Duke has announced that everyone, even those who have been vaccinated, will be required to wear face coverings inside their campus. The state of North Carolina is also requiring masks in interior campus spaces until further notice.

At UNC, students must provide a copy of their vaccination record before returning to campus or be tested weekly. Less than a week after students were briefed on the new rules, a UNC professor sounded the alarm on Twitter about students knowing how to buy fake COVID-19 vaccine cards and knowing others who had submitted one to the university.

The UNC performs asymptomatic tests at the Carolina Union on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for students.
