An unusual diagnosis was made for a woman who had egg-shaped brain growth.

Rachel Palma, 42, started playing bizarrely in January 2018, reports ABC 7.

Mrs. Palma from Manhattan started to put down her coffee cup and had memory problems.

"There were days when I did not know where I was," she told Today Show.

The 42-year-old woman consulted a doctor who did an X-ray of the skull revealing an egg-shaped lesion in the head.

Dr. Jonathan Rasouli, a neurosurgery resident at Mount Sinai Health System in New York, told Live Science that the lesion could be cancerous.

He told the Today Show that the lesion "looked like a quail egg".

Ms. Palma underwent a three-hour operation and her growth was withdrawn.

But by studying what was thought to be a cancerous lesion, the surgeons discovered that it was something quite different.

The discovery took Dr. Rasouli and his colleagues "cheers and applause".

It turns out that growth was a parasite. Mrs. Palma's skull was a tapeworm.

Nobody knows how it happened to him in the head. She has never been outside of the United States.

This meant that Mrs. Palma probably did not need surgeons to cut her skull, but that she could simply be treated with antibiotics.

She told ABC 7 that she did not doubt that Dr. Rasouli and her team had saved her life.

"I stopped asking questions and I started celebrating and making the most of life," Ms. Palma told ABC 7.

"Because in an instant, this can be removed."
