United Airlines could make the Covid-19 vaccine mandatory for employees, and other companies should follow suit, United chief executive Scott Kirby told workers at a meeting Thursday, according to a transcript reviewed by Reuters .
A United spokeswoman confirmed that the company “is strongly considering” making vaccines mandatory, although that is not yet a policy.
“I think the right thing to do is for United Airlines, and other companies, to require vaccines and make them mandatory,” Kirby said.
“If others take it and are ready to start pushing vaccines, you should probably expect United to be among the first wave of companies to do so.”
CNBC previously reported the news of Kirby wanting to force the vaccine on employees.
U.S. private companies may require their employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19, but this is unlikely to be done due to the risks of legal and cultural backlash, experts have said.
Companies are still in the early stages of accessing and distributing vaccines against the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, but inoculation is seen as the key to safely resuming operations in crowded warehouses, lines factories and sales areas.
