An American died every 40 seconds from COVID-19 on Tuesday, marking the highest death toll the nation has seen since May.
A total of 2,157 Americans lost their lives on Tuesday to the virus, the first time deaths have exceeded 2,000 since May.
The tally was a few hundred less than the deadliest day since the start of the pandemic, which killed 2,806 people on April 14, according to Reuters.
The deaths come as U.S. hospitalizations for COVID-19 hit a record 87,000 on Tuesday – and 170,000 new infections have been recorded – casting a veil over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
Experts and elected officials have repeatedly urged people to stay home and not travel on Thanksgiving, fearing large gatherings could lead to an increase in cases that will further burden hospitals.
“Hang on a little longer,” Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Wednesday in a “Good Morning America” interview on the need to wear masks, d ‘Avoid crowds and stay away from others.
“If we do these things, we’re going to be fine. So this is my last call before the holidays.
