The Oregon Health Authority recommends the use of nearly 27,000 doses of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine despite reports in Oregon and California of a small number of adverse reactions in people inoculated from the same batch of vaccine.
State officials said on Wednesday they were following advice they received from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which “does not recommend that health departments stop giving this or any other batch of the drug. Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.
State officials did not say when they received this advice from the CDC regarding Moderna’s 041L20A vaccine batch, a batch of roughly one million doses distributed nationwide.
California halted inoculations of this batch on Sunday out of “extreme caution” after fewer than 10 people “appeared to have a possible serious allergic reaction” at the same vaccination clinic.
Oregon is studying two side effects in people vaccinated from the same batch.
Oregon has received 57,400 doses of this batch at 118 sites, state officials said. As of Wednesday, 26,567 remained locally.
“Adverse reactions to vaccines are extremely rare, but we pay special attention when they do occur,” Dr. Dean Sidelinger, state health officer and epidemiologist, said in a statement. “At this time, there is no evidence that these events were associated with any other vaccination site and I encourage all eligible Oregonians to get vaccinated as soon as the vaccination becomes available.”
On Tuesday, Oregon reported administering 225,066 doses of the Moderna or Pfizer coronavirus vaccine.
State officials did not immediately respond to questions about the two side effects reported for Oregonians vaccinated with the Moderna batch now under review. Officials also did not immediately indicate how often side effects from the vaccine were reported.
But a federal database updated last Friday lists 51 events in Oregon related to the Moderna coronavirus vaccine. This includes six reports of headaches and two reports of difficult breathing, nausea, feeling abnormal, sore throat, pain, or tremors.
Oregon has recorded 246 adverse events related to the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine, according to the federal database.
State officials on Wednesday encouraged vaccine administrators to release batch numbers in response to patient questions and reiterated their hope of monitoring patients for 15 to 30 minutes after the coronavirus vaccine is administered.
