ELLENSBURG – A student from the University of Central Washington has been quarantined after being exposed to measles during a recent international trip.

Public health officials from Kittitas County said that the student had not been vaccinated against the highly contagious disease. The student recently returned to Ellensburg after an international trip and was quarantined until the risk of developing an illness and spreading measles had passed.

"Currently, the student is not sick and can not transmit the measles virus to anyone else," public health officials said. "The student does not live on the CWU campus.

The Kittitas County Public Health Bureau is working with the state's Department of Health to confirm the exposure.

"Measles is a serious and very contagious disease," public health officials said. "Recent outbreaks have occurred in the United States and among low-immunized groups exposed to measles during international travel.
