Unvaccinated people face a much higher risk of death from the delta variant of COVID-19, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control.
The study tracked incidents of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in 13 U.S. jurisdictions over two periods between April 4 and July 17 in 2021. The results showed that the numbers for all categories were “considerably” higher in those not fully vaccinated compared to those who were fully vaccinated.

After the second period, which occurred between June 20 and July 17, the study noted that individuals not fully vaccinated are 4.5 times more likely to be infected (89.1 per 100,000 versus 0 , 19.4), 10 times more likely to be hospitalized (7.0 per 100,000 vs. 0.7) and 11 times more likely to die (1.1 per 100,000 vs. 0.1) from the delta variant.
The time period examined by the study coincided with the delta variant becoming the dominant strain in the United States.

“Getting the vaccine protects against serious illnesses from COVID-19, including the Delta variant,” the study notes. “Monitoring the incidence of COVID-19 by vaccination status could provide early signals of potential changes in vaccine effectiveness that can be confirmed by robust controlled studies. “
The new study highlights the need for vaccinations at a time when the Biden administration faces a sharp setback in efforts to increase vaccinations across the country, including a general mandate requiring all employers over 100 employees apply vaccinations.

Republican governors have said they plan to resist the mandate, which President Biden says “disappointed” him.
“This is not a game,” Biden told a reporter on Friday of the news that Republicans had pushed back his six-point coronavirus plan.
