CDC: Pregnant women with COVID-19 more likely to be hospitalized
Breaking from their previous guidelines, the CDC now says pregnant women with COVID-19 are at greater risk than non-pregnant women.

A family mourns the loss of a mother and unborn child who died from complications from COVID-19.
Haley Richardson, 32, was almost 7 months pregnant when she was admitted to hospital, WKRG reported. Her unborn daughter died on August 18 and she passed away two days later on August 20.
Richardson was a labor and delivery nurse at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., And shared a 2-year-old daughter with her husband Jordan Richardson.
Jordan told WKRG his wife fell ill after testing positive for the virus in late July. She had decided not to get the vaccine for fear of what might happen to their unborn daughter.
After being sick at home, her heart rate increased, and she was taken to hospital and then transferred to the intensive care unit on the main campus of USA Health Hospital in Mobile.
“After about three or four days in the hospital, the [obstetrician] told her she was going to lose the baby, ”Jason Whatley, a family friend, told AL.com. “And she just kept getting worse and worse.”
Whatley told the outlet that doctors had advised Haley that they should treat her as if she was not pregnant so her life could be saved.
“Haley called me crying, saying she was going to lose the baby,” said Julie Mulkey, Haley’s mother.

Haley posted a final Facebook post on August 9 detailing her experience.
“Here in the dark, in the wee hours of the morning, it’s so easy to pretend it was all a nightmare or that I’m right here in this hospital bed because of my own issues with Covid,” she declared. .
“There is nothing wrong with my sweet little girl I thought I was protecting in my own womb. I know the prognosis and I know the reality.”
She then thanked her friends and family for their support.
Whatley told AL.com that Haley was on a waiting list to be transferred to UAB for ECMO treatment – a machine that pumps blood out of the body, then oxygen, before injecting it back – before his health is deteriorating rapidly.
After his death, Jordan advocates for pregnant women to be vaccinated. Earlier this month, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention released a statement saying vaccinations were safe for pregnant women.
“It’s kind of weird to say, but she has one up there and I have one here to take care of it, so that makes it a bit easier,” Jordan told WRKG.
