A Colorado woman with stage 5 kidney disease took to “The Ingraham Angle” on Thursday to discuss her refusal of a kidney transplant and the immunization status of her potential donor.
“I believe my days are numbered as I continue to deteriorate my GFR numbers,” said Leilani Lutali. GFR, or glomerular filtration rate, measures how well the kidneys work to filter toxins and waste products from the blood. A number of 60 or more is considered normal. Stage 5 is characterized by GFR numbers below 15, where the kidneys have almost or completely stopped functioning.
In September, Colorado’s health system UCHealth refused the transplant because she had not received a vaccine, Lutali said.

“I contacted the hospital to decide if dialysis was an option. They said at this point that the [vaccine] the shot wouldn’t be necessary, but told me I was irresponsible for not getting it, “she said.
Lutali donor Jaimee Fougner has expressed outrage at the hospital’s decision. She had already said, “How can I sit here and allow them to kill my friend when I have a perfectly good kidney and can save his life?”
The two met in Bible study less than a year ago.
“I want to start crying,” host Laura Ingraham said of seeing the two friends together. “It’s the most selfless thing, it’s amazing,” Ingraham said of Fougner’s willingness to donate his kidney.
Fougner said she was “stunned by the lack of compassion and consideration” in allowing Lutali to be her driver. “They are holding my kidney hostage and she is going to die because they will not give it to her,” she said.
Ingraham asked if there was any rationale or science behind the hospital’s decision.
Leilani said she came up with a number of remedies, including signing a medical waiver regarding not taking the vaccine.
Ingraham concluded that this sounded like “a classic case of discrimination”.

“I don’t know if people smoke too much weed in Colorado, or what’s going on,” Ingraham said.
The health care system released a statement that said, “For transplant patients who contract COVID-19, the death rate ranges from around 20% to over 30%. This shows the extreme risk COVID-19 poses to transplant recipients after their surgery. ”
