People and businesses around the world, including those in Indiana, face a growing list of cyber threats.
Ransomware. Supply chain attacks. Theft of personal files. Computer viruses. Fraud. Spying. Identity theft. Attacks on critical infrastructure. These threats motivate an urgent need to protect private data and information securely.
The first one Indiana Statewide Cyber Security Summit October 18 will bring together cybersecurity researchers and leaders from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University and Purdue University. This virtual event will connect cybersecurity experts and thought leaders from across the state, broadening discussions on how universities, the private sector, civil society and the public can work more closely to address threats. cyber threats in the state and beyond.

Cyber attacks, including those using ransomware, disrupt vital state services, such as the recent attacks on Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis and Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana. A 2020 survey from more than 300 public and private organizations across Indiana revealed that nearly a fifth had suffered a cyberattack in the past three years. Additionally, cybersecurity jobs are unfilled, with up to 2,300 jobs currently open in Indiana.
“Cybersecurity is at the heart of economic competitiveness and national security, and Indiana universities continue to undertake ground-breaking research in this area and provide interdisciplinary cybersecurity training to students,” said Scott Shackelford, associate professor of business law and ethics at the IU Kelley School of Business, executive director of the Ostrom Workshop and president of UI Cyber Security Risk Management Program. “We are excited to partner with Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame to highlight cutting-edge cybersecurity research being conducted statewide and to discuss new opportunities for research collaboration. . “
Summit leaders say Indiana universities have strong capabilities that can help in this fight.
