Urban Meyer is really starting to tour as the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. On Thursday he added a big chunk to his staff.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Meyer hired Darrell bevell as his new offensive coordinator. Bevell finished the 2020 season as interim head coach of the Detroit Lions.
According to Pelissero, Bevell was up for several jobs.
“The #Jaguars should hire Darrell bevell as their offensive coordinator, the sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo, ” Pelissero tweeted. “Several teams have tried to hire Bevell, who finished last season as a #The Lions‘interim coach, but it looks like he’ll land with Urban Meyer. “
Prior to serving as the Lions’ interim head coach last year, Bevell was the offensive coordinator in 2019 and partly through 2020. From 2011 to 2017, Bevell was the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks and assisted the team to win a Super Bowl title in 2013 and another appearance in 2014. He was also the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2010.
Bevell went 1-4 as the Lions interim head coach last year. This hire shows Meyer’s willingness for a veteran staff around him.
Former Ohio State Quarterback Justin fields thinks Meyer is going to be very successful in the NFL after spending his entire career in college.
“Coach Day recruited me, but I mean I heard great things about Coach Meyer and the way he coaches.” Fields told TMZ. “So I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a big hit in Jacksonville.”
In an interview with Jaguars.com yesterday, the legendary college coach said he understands the difference in level of competitiveness between college football and the NFL.
“You are in a league designed to be .500”, Meyer said. “You talk about Coach Belichick, a great friend of mine and someone I have always admired. He’s the best ever. You talk about a 60% winning percentage. You talk about this league … is designed to be .500 … that’s the biggest challenge is to look across the pitch and say, “they’ve got what you’ve got.” Or sometimes, ‘they’ve got more than you.’ “
Another big question that has come up is Meyer’s health, which he has addressed several times. during his first press conference as head coach of the team. Meyer retired in 2018 due to health problems, including one arachnoid cyst on his brain. He struggled with stress headaches, especially as the 2018 season progressed.
“Well, if you ask me if I’m going to like to lose, I think we all know the answer to that,” Meyer said. “I’m older. It’s something I’m going to be very conscientious about. It’s something I’m going to watch very closely. I’ll be the head coach, but I’m going to hire some great coaches who will be I. don’t go running like crazy on the training ground.
