FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Urban Eugene Rahoi, 102, died on May 20, 2021 at the Pioneer Home in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Urban was born January 7, 1919, in Iron Mountain, to Elsie and Philip Rahoi.

He married his predecessor wife, Vienna, in 1940.

Urban worked for the Michigan Highway Department, but then joined the Army Air Corps (ancestor of the modern US Air Force) and trained to be a pilot at the start of World War II.

Urban has taught formation flying and flown B-17 missions in North Africa, Italy and more.

After the army, he attended the Michigan Technological Institute.

He eventually moved to Alaska where he continued to do a lot of things including starting the Vi Trailer Park, Lakeview Terrace Mobile Home Park, Rahoi Sand and Gravel, Ptarmigan Lake Lodge and two airlines. He was also a master guide, holding the number one guide license in Alaska until his passion in 2016.

Urban has received many awards and recognitions during his life. He received the “Legend and hero” award, the Wright Brother’s Master Pilot Award, the Frank Golata “Men of vision” Award, recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest active pilot flying until his stroke, and won trophies for winning the Tired Iron snow machine race multiple times.

Urban is survived by his sisters, Phyllis Ewig and Evelyn Peterson; son, Gene; daughter, Holly; grandchildren, Brandon, Megan, Josh, Brittany, Jon and Rainee; as well as 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A Celebration of Life took place in Alaska at Pioneer Park on June 9, 2021.

A funeral service will be held at Iron Mountain for Urban and Vienna, at Iron Mountain Cemetery Park on Wednesday, September 15 at 1 p.m.
