Spoon Magician Uri Geller finally gave Nintendo permission to print Kadabra on Pokémon cards again after a 20-year legal battle in which Geller claimed the character’s likeness was too familiar to his.
After an article on The Gamer, once again explored why the psychic of mid-stage evolution Pokemon hasn’t appeared on Pokémon cards for about two decades, Geller seems to have changed his mind.
“I’m so sorry for what I did 20 years ago,” Geller tweeted. “Children and adults, I let go of the ban. Now it’s up to #Nintendo to bring back my #kadabra #pokemon card. It will probably be one of the rarest cards around! Lots of energy and love to all!
This historic dispute dates back to the year 2000, when Geller criticized Nintendo for using its resemblance to Kadabra, whose Japanese name is written as Yungerer, Yungeller, and Yun Geller … you can see why the Wizard of Life actual disputed it.
“Nintendo turned me into an evil, occult Pokémon character,” Geller said in 2000. “Nintendo stole my identity using my name and signature image.”
So why this change of mind? Well, it looks like Geller has softened a bit over the years, and The Gamer’s recent post reopened some old wounds for Geller and Pokemon fans.
Speaking to The Gamer, Geller said, “Due to the huge volume of emails, I keep begging myself to allow Nintendo to bring back Kadabra / Yungeller, I sent […] a letter to the president of Nintendo giving them permission to relaunch Uri Geller Kadabra / Yungeller worldwide. “
While Geller’s claim was said to have been “taken up by ‘two representatives of Nintendo’,” it’s not clear when we’ll see Kadabra appear on the face of a Pokémon card again.
Hopefully, it’ll be worth the wait: The last time we saw the first gen Pokémon appear on a map was in 2003.
