The United States administered more than a million doses of the vaccine on Friday, marking the third day in a row more than a million vaccines have been distributed, according to a White House official.
Cyrus Shahpar, White House COVID-19 data director, said more than 1.05 million doses had been administered as of Friday, including 526,000 first injections.
Shahpar noted that 200 million Americans have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
The United States has already failed to meet several vaccine targets, including the goal of having at least 70% of American adults vaccinated by July 4 and a commitment to send 80 million doses of the vaccine. COVID-19 abroad by the end of June.
This week, the White House recommended that Americans who have received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines receive boosters eight months after their second vaccine. (A booster for those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is also likely, but the company has yet to complete a clinical trial to determine the effectiveness of an additional dose.)
Although the vaccines are very effective, health officials said “a booster will be needed to maximize the protection from the vaccine and extend its durability.”
Hospitalizations have steadily increased as the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus continues to spread and many Americans continue to refuse the vaccine.
