Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech will deliver an additional 100 million doses of their coronavirus vaccine to the United States by this summer after lengthy negotiations over what the companies could deliver, given their commitments to other countries.

The $ 1.95 billion deal doubles the total US order for the vaccine to 200 million doses. Pfizer and BioNTech have said they can deliver 70 million doses by June 30, 2021, with the remaining 30 million doses delivered by the end of July.

The expanded deal comes a week after Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told reporters Pfizer was facing “manufacturing challenges,” a charge the company vehemently rejected. “Pfizer has had no production issues with its COVID-19 vaccine, and no shipments containing the vaccine are suspended or delayed,” a spokesperson said.
