It is “inexplicable” that some US states are waiving restrictions as Covid-19 continues to infect tens of thousands of Americans every day, Dr Anthony Fauci said on Wednesday.

Texas and Mississippi decided this week to end statewide mask warrants.

“It’s just inexplicable why you would want to step down now,” Fauci told CNN.
“I understand the need to want to get back to normalcy, but you will only back down if you completely reject public health guidelines, especially when we are dealing with 55,000 to 70,000 infections a day. in the United States, ”he added. “It’s a very, very high baseline.”

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the administration’s guidelines for pandemic precautions are not arbitrary.

“We know these interventions are working. It’s very clear,” Fauci said. “When you implement them, you see the cases decrease. When you remove the cases, the cases increase.”
