With the iPhone XS Max, the next step is a new "MacBook Air" and iPad Pro.
Economical MacBook:
If reports come up, the new MacBook Air (or what Apple decides to call it) is perhaps the most popular MacBook for a long time – if the price allows it.
Here are the highlights of 2018 "MacBook Air" (based on reports and projections):
- First major overhaul of the 13-inch MacBook Air in 10 years (since its announcement by Steve Jobs in 2008).
- First Retina Display for MacBook Economy
- Finer display glasses
- Priced around $ 1,000, similar to the current MacBook Air (starts at $ 999), maybe a little more
- Intel processor: Older Kaby Lake or the just announced Whiskey Lake
Processor:
One of the most watched specifications of the new MacBook will be the processor. Whiskey Lake is the brand new, low-power, 8-generation, 8-generation Intel Quad-core processor just announced (late August). (Here is a longer explanation courtesy of Tom's Hardware.)
Whiskey Lake would be an interesting choice for Apple for a MacBook Air-class notebook, as the more sophisticated 138-inch MacBook Pros with Touch Bar uses the fourth-generation, four-core Kaby Lake chips introduced last year. And the 13-inch MacBook Pro non-Touch-Bar, less expensive (but still more expensive than the MacBook Air), use even older 7th generation dual-core processors.
I see two scenarios (which may not be incompatible): Apple opts for the proven Intel 7th generation chip to reduce costs. And / or Apple opts for Kaby Lake quad-core if it offers some models with a differentiated pricing.
12-inch MacBook:
This is also a big question mark. Will Apple keep the 12-inch MacBook ** and update it? Is the new low-cost MacBook more or less a 13-inch version of the 12-inch MacBook? How will Apple differentiate itself?
The answer to the last question is that Apple will find a way to differentiate itself if it continues the 12-inch MacBook. And there is a differentiation that will not go away: an ultra-thin 2-pound MacBook costs more to manufacture than a 2.5 or 3-pound MacBook Air. In the world of laptops – and especially in the world of Apple – the lighter and thinner it is, the more expensive it is. This is not an insignificant difference.
iPad Pro:
New highlights of the iPad Pro (based on reports and projections):
- Screen size of 11 and 12.9 inches (Bloomberg)
- Face identifier
- TrueDepth Camera System (for Face ID)
- iPhone X style with thinner glasses and no home button (MacRumors)
- No nicks
- No headphone jack (maybe)
- Price similar to the current price of the iPad Pro: from $ 649 (10.5) and $ 799 (12.9)
Apple dominates the tablet market, although the market has slowed relative to the explosive growth of five years ago. Apple delivered 11.5 million iPads in the second quarter of 2018, more than double the number of Samsung, which was far behind, according to researcher IDC.

NOTES:
* To say that the current MacBook Air is unsatisfactory is a euphemism. See Check notebook 2017 MacBook Air Specifications / Reviews, which calls the performance "old" and "display" technology of the last decade ".
** The 12-inch MacBook is my favorite MacBook and one of the best laptops ever made. It's the only laptop I've ever used that offers the portability and feel (weight) of a 2-pound tablet, but offers enough performance to be used every day, any time. the day as the main machine. The closest thing (and another of my favorite laptops) is the Google Pixelbook.
