Vernasca leather is an incredibly upscale material that works well with the rest of the X4's impressive interiors. BMW is so good for low-viscosity plastics and viscerally grained for the dashboard and doors, that it would be almost shameful to wrap these leather materials.

The focal point of the Inside the X4 is the standard 10.25-inch touchscreen that is as shiny as the broadcast desk of your favorite sports commentary show. I still prefer a built-in screen instead of a screen that comes straight out of the dashboard like Alien, but when it comes to non-integrated navigation screens, BMW is doing their best. Another thing that BMW does better? The ruffles and thick-edged configuration of the X4 are perfect.

The inner eulogy continues until the back. Just as the number of chassis systems that blend in the background to improve your driving, so are the seats. I've never felt pressure points, and after hours of driving, I left the X4 with happy hindquarters. This crossover has one of the most comfortable cabins in its class (and maybe even a class above)

If the X4 M40i has all the power you want, the 248 horsepower X4 xDrive30i has all the power you need. The low-priced model can reach 60 mph in six seconds flat, but without these two extra cylinders and their noise therefore more engaging, the four-cylinder X4 is more fashionable at four-wheel drive than the choice of interesting performance.

All, and the low-power version of a car can be almost as much fun as its "hair on fire" version. But with the X4, power is paramount. The difference between the M40i and the xDrive30i is only 107 ponies, but the personalities are night and day.

In addition to feeling faster despite a lower weight of 177 pounds at its lower version, X4 M40i spews and accelerates like a Jaguar F-Type. The powertrain of the M40i has a lot of personality. The 2.0-liter turbo X4 xDrive30i is more like a camera. It's refined and it does the job – we would expect nothing less than BMW's four-cylinder turbo – but you'll never love the 2.0-liter.

If you hate driving fast, you'll never know the difference between the four and six cylinders. Your bank account will obviously love the $ 10,000 savings the xDrive30i offers you, but I have to say it again: two additional combustion chambers and 107 horsepower add a much more visceral experience to the X4 M40i.

BMW's latest "After Sales Service" offers many things to many people, and accomplishes them. It could have been from another "jack of all trade, master of none" machine, but refreshingly, the X4 (the M40i at least) is remarkably sport-oriented. Aside from the numb direction, it's a crossover that feels inspired by some of BMW's biggest driver-driven, 90-year-old drivers and the early 2000s. If the new X4 is a sign of things to come, BMW could be making enthusiasts once again stunned.
