The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is the first modern large-format pickup to feature a four-cylinder engine option. We now know how effective the new plant will be. The all-new 2.7-liter turbocharged powertrain will generate about 20 miles per gallon per city, 23 mpg of highway and 20 mpg in propulsion configuration, paired with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission.
Despite its 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque, the above-mentioned fuel economy figures may seem slightly disappointing for some heavy truck buyers, as they are not leading the rankings compared to engines of its main competitors, the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.
According to FuelEconomy.gov data, the Ford F-Series 2018 truck delivers up to 20 mpg in the city / 26 highways and 22 mpg in combination with its 2.7-liter turbocharged V6. The Blue Oval engine actually offers more power (325) and more torque, about 400 lb-ft. The naturally aspirated 3.3-liter V6 of the much larger F-150, which Chevy believes is a better comparison, still offers 19 cities / 25 cars combined / 22 combined, but is less powerful at 290 ch and 265 pound-feet.
For its part, the new Ram 1500 2019 offers a 3.6-liter V6 powertrain that generates 305 horsepower and 269 foot-pounds. It also provides EPA estimates of 20 mpg in the city, 25 highways and 22 combined. However, the Ram truck stacks somewhat efficiency because it features the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles hybrid eTorque assistance system, which also means that the powertrain can deliver up to 359 lb. ft of torque in bursts.
The new 2.7-liter turbo engine of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 replaces the naturally aspirated 4.3-liter V6 of the Silverado LT with high volume and the new RST sport truck variant. The long-life six-cylinder remains available as a base engine elsewhere in the Silverado lineup.
Despite somewhat disappointing fuel economy figures for the new Chevy four-cylinder, buyers should be satisfied with the 2,280-lb drivetrain capacity rating of up to 600 pounds more than comparable trucks way of its competitors. However, the maximum towing index of 2.7 liters of 7,200 pounds is slightly worse.
The 2.7-liter engine is equipped with a dual spiral turbo for improved responsiveness, as well as cylinder deactivation and stopping / starting technology. Its lighter weight should also help improve handling.
GM has not yet released 2.7-liter fuel efficiency data Silverado 4×4 variants.
Chevy Bowtie fans may not have to wait long to find a more efficient truck. GM has promised that a new 3.0-liter Duramax diesel would arrive in early 2019. Coupled with a new 10-speed automatic system and a stop / start system, the diesel option should to be both more muscular and more economical.
