2019 Lexus ES will be the first production car without a mirror

For the 2019 ES mid-size sedan, Lexus sells traditional side-view mirrors for digital cameras.

The new ES will become the first mirror-less production car when it goes on sale in October. However, the new Lexus camera system will only be available on the Japanese market for the ES 300h L version.

In Japanese markets, the Lexus ES 2019 will replace traditional mirrors with a new digital camera system.

With Lexus '' Digital Exterior Mirrors '', typical glass mirror housings are replaced by rear-facing digital cameras. The power of these cameras is then displayed on small 5-inch monitors inside the cabin, located at the base of the front pillars. The cameras even automatically adjust their focus field when a blinker is activated or the vehicle is in reverse gear.

In the United States, the technology has not yet been legalized, although vehicles are already sold with video screens replacing the central mirror.

The stream coming from the new side camera will be displayed inside two 5-inch screens placed on the pillars of the ES.

The development of cars without conventional mirrors has been proposed for some time because of their many advantages. In addition to providing a wider view and better visibility at night and in bad weather, these digital systems can contribute to better fuel economy through the more aerodynamic design of the camera configuration.

While these benefits are quite satisfactory, let's just hope they are flexible enough to bend when distracted drivers or pedestrians decide to cross them. It's already quite expensive to replace broken mirrors, and we do not want to start thinking about the cost of a brand new camera system.

Although regulation does not allow technology in the United States, it is legal in Europe, where Audi plans to introduce it as an option for the automaker's next 100% electric E-Tron SUV. Audi and Japanese developers continue to lobby for unrequited cars in the United States, so only time will tell if we will soon see new vehicles equipped with these stylish candlesticks.
