With new data breaches appearing almost daily, it's impossible for a person to keep track of all of this. Fortunately, there is an app for this, and soon, it will be even more accessible to millions of users.
Security researcher Troy Hunt announced Tuesday that his data breach service, Have I Been Pwned (HIBP), will soon be integrated with the Mozilla Firefox browser. A feature found in Firefox Monitor, a new Mozilla security tool, currently being tested, allows users to check whether their personal data has been compromised by data breaches recorded by HIBP.
HIBP allows users to check their e-mail addresses against an extensive database of known compromised accounts. Its database currently holds 5.1 billion accounts from 289 hacked sites, such as the recent Ticketfly incident.
"That's important because Firefox has an installation base of hundreds of millions of people, which greatly expands the audience that can be achieved once this feature comes out of the mainstream," he said. Hunt wrote Tuesday in a blog.
According to Mozilla, about 250,000 users (mostly in the US) will be invited to test the feature next week.
In addition, HIBP has also been integrated into 1Password, the popular password manager, which Hunt says has personally used in the past seven years. (A screenshot of the app in action is below.)
The Watchtower function of 1Password will now warn users when an account is reported by HIBP as having been exposed. This will allow users to quickly change passwords whenever they may be compromised.
