OnePlus has never ventured outside the smartphone market, although it is about to release a smartwatch. This is changing now, since OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, has announced that a TV product is in development.
"We want to make the home environment a new level of smart connectivity," says Lau. We call it: OnePlus TV. "
No other concrete details have been included in the announcement. The mention of "picture quality and audio experience" indicates that it will be a stand-alone smart TV, as opposed to a broadcast box (like an Nvidia Shield). It is unclear what operating system will be used, but Android TV is probably a safe bet.
Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, provided more details in an interview with PCMag. He said that television would be something like a smart home hub, able to respond to voice commands and control other devices. The TV will use a "big provider" operating system and the release of updates will be a priority.
In terms of hardware, Lau said that OnePlus would buy billboards from another company, but that "chipsets and image processing algorithms" would be created internally. The finished product will be a 4K LED TV and should be delivered next year.
Lau has also reversed the prospect of a separate decoder, similar to an Nvidia Shield or an Apple TV. "We want a seamless user experience," he told PCMag. "People do not want two things, the mission for us is to combine the two things."
