The next vice president to leave Microsoft is the current president of Cortana, Javier Soltero, according to several reports. This departure is part of an ongoing internal reform at Microsoft, which saw executives, including veteran veteran Terry Myerson, leave the company.
Soltero joined Microsoft in late 2014 when the company acquired Acompli, the mobile email startup that it co-founded. From there, he took charge of Outlook Mobile and then took charge of the entire Outlook division. Subsequently, Soltero joined the Office team before being appointed to the head of Cortana in March 2018.
However, while Microsoft was transforming Cortana's traditional digital assistant managed by Microsoft's artificial intelligence and research team into a more digital assistant run by the Microsoft Experiments and Peripherals team, it seems that Soltero's services were no longer needed.
According to Mary Jo Foley, of ZDNet, who announced the departure, Soltero will "return to his entrepreneurial activities" and will take up his duties before his departure, later this year. Now the big question is this: what will happen to Cortana in the future?
Despite Microsoft's efforts, Cortana has never really seduced Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant, although Cortana is integrated with Windows 10 and Microsoft has collaborated with Amazon to develop new skills for Cortana and Alexa. Instead of competing directly with the top three assistants, Microsoft seems to want to make Cortana a more integrated productivity tool, now that the digital assistant is now in the hands of the team that also oversees Microsoft Office and Windows.
