Netgear has launched its first routers supporting the next-generation Wi-Fi standard. Netgear Nighthawk AX8 and Nighthawk AX12 routers are high-end routers capable of providing broadband connectivity. However, their main asset is support for the next Wi-Fi standard, Wi-Fi 802.11ax, or the new naming scheme. Wi-Fi 6. Netgear's new routers feature improved specifications and entirely new designs. Replacing the recently popular multi-antenna routers, the Nighthawk AX8 and Nighthawk AX12 have a very futuristic design in which the antennas remain upright. While the Nighthawk AX8 is currently available for pre-order, the Nighthawk AX12 will be retailed next year.
As noted earlier, the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 Wi-Fi 8 Streaming Router (RAX80) supports the new Wi-Fi 802.11ax standard (also known as Wi-Fi 6), with speeds of up to 6 Gbps. The company says the router can provide up to four times more data capacity than previous standards. Wi-Fi 6 supports technologies such as OFDMA, MU-MIMO, support for 160 MHz and 1024 QAM channels. Notably, the Nighthawk AX8 is powered by a 64-bit 1.8 GHz quad-core processor that is supposed to transfer gigabytes of data with "almost zero CPU load." In addition, support for 160 MHz channels would double the speed offered by 80 MHz channels to provide Gigabit speed to compatible devices. Netgear reports that the Nighthawk AX8 is the world's first home router with multi-gig Internet support through Gigabit Ethernet port aggregation. The router is supposed to be ready for the upcoming multi-gig Internet wave in Docsis 3.1.
The Nighthawk AX12 12-Stream Wi-Fi router also supports Wi-Fi 6. It is supposed to provide combined Wi-Fi speeds of up to 6 Gbps. It is powered by an optimized quad-core 64-bit AX to 2.2 GHz processor, for broadband connectivity required for home automation applications, 4K UHD streaming, online gaming, and more. It comes with eight high-performance antennas to amplify Wi-Fi signals, for maximum range and reliable coverage. The Nighthawk AX12 is also Netgear's first home router with a 5Gig port, says the company.
The Nighthawk AX8 comes with two 4×4 antenna arrays, one for Wi-Fi 5 GHz and another for 2.4 GHz. It has five Gigabit Ethernet ports and supports a total wireless speed of 6 GHz. The Nighthawk AX12 has a similar feature set, but includes an 8×8 antenna array for its 5GHz network.
In terms of price and availability, the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 costs $ 399.99 (about Rs. 28,900) and is available for pre-order on Amazon. The Netgear Nighthawk AX12, however, will arrive in the course of 2019 and prices are still not announced. Netgear has also introduced a subscription-based Wi-Fi as a service with the Nighthawk AX12. There is a beta test program that allows users to try the device for 90 days and pay if they turn it on.
