On Friday, Apple launched a service program designed to solve an iPhone X display problem that causes erratic behavior of the device's touch screen.
According to a support document posted on the Apple website, the company said it has identified a problem that "some" screens of the iPhone X do not respond to touch, respond intermittently to touch or react without human interaction. Any or all of an affected screen might exhibit aberrant behavior, Apple said.
The problem has been assigned to a component that may fail on the display module. Apple has not identified the component nor the number of iPhone X devices affected by the crash.
Owners of iPhone X models that are experiencing the touch problem can visit Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for free replacement of the display module.
As usual, Apple or an authorized repair center will examine the customer's devices to determine if they are candidates for the service program. If an iPhone is eligible, the defective part will be replaced free of charge. Owners who have already paid for eligible display module repairs can contact Apple to request a refund.
The program applies only to iPhone X handsets and covers the devices concerned for three years after the initial retail sale of the device.
Apple has solved a number of hardware and software issues related to the flagship iPhone from last year, but the current repair program is a first for the phone.
Earlier this year, Apple recognized a problem that would prevent the iPhone from touching the touch when its device would be exposed to rapid changes in temperature. Previously, the company had filed complaints about the accuracy of GPS, a problem that was then resolved with a software update.
In May, Apple recently launched in-store replacement solutions for iPhone X units facing face identification issues. The repair facilities were asked to run the diagnostics first and replace the TrueDepth camera system before distributing replacement hardware.
