Update: November 10 – Microsoft has officially confirmed the problem and said it was hoping to start applying a fix over the next 24 hours.
Spotted by The registerMicrosoft's activation servers began by accidentally downgrading expensive Windows 10 Pro systems into less expensive Windows 10 home computers and then invalidating their licenses. Needless to say, it's a big financial blow (Home costs $ 119, Pro costs $ 199) and the users concerned are furious.
"After upgrading to Insider Build 18277, my Windows 10 digital license became invalid. I do not understand! … No change of material, nothing has changed. I do not know what to do, " tweeted an assigned user.
"One of our three-year-old Lenovo Yogas has just decided to trigger a Windows 0xC004C003 activation error. The Windows Diagnostic Tool indicates that the machine has a Windows 10 Home license … Dumbasses » tweeted another.
And it's not just the recovery centers that are affected. Problems with Automated Windows 10 Home Downgrades Are Underway reported with new installations on different versions of Windows Pro.
"Same problem on Dell computers running Windows 10 Pro 1803 that we just bought. Need to deploy to clients but they will not activate, "explained another user on Reddit.
Microsoft's answer? It's not great.
On his official Answer pageMicrosoft warns that there is a "temporary problem" with the company's activation server, but has not disclosed any additional details. With regard to Microsoft Call Center users, the reply is simply waiting for a solution.
Like The Register, I contacted the Microsoft press team for an answer and will update this article if they receive one.
