According to Samsung, the new "tri-cluster" architecture of the Exynos 9820, consisting of two custom-designed cores, two high performance ARM Cortex-A75 cores and four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores, is designed on a network of 8 nanometers. The FinFET process provides a 15% increase in multicore performance when associated with the enhanced task scheduler. Performance on one core is 20% higher than the previous generation, while energy efficiency is globally improved by 40%.

Samsung claims that the aforementioned NPU performs artificial intelligence tasks about seven times faster than the predecessor of the Exynos 9820. The Exynos 9820 is Samsung's first system-on-chip with a dedicated AI chip, succeeding Huawei's Kirin NPU and Apple's neural engine.

The Exynos 9820 is no exception in terms of graphics performance. The on-board Mali-G76 MP12 graphics processing unit (GPU) has larger runtime engines with dual channel count, delivering 40% and 35% better performance and energy efficiency, respectively, compared to the Exynos 9810.

The Image Signal Processor (ISP) has also been upgraded. The Exynos 9820 supports up to five sensors, including an infrared sensor, and enables faster autofocus. In addition, it can juggle sensors up to 22 megapixels in front and back or in dual camera configurations with 16 megapixels, and is able to record in high dynamic range (HDR) in 10-bit color and encode and decode 8K videos at 30 frames per second or 4K videos at 150 frames per second.

In terms of connectivity, the Exynos 9820 contains an LTE-Advanced Pro modem that supports LTE Category 20, offering downlink speeds of up to 2.0 Gbps with carrier aggregation (CA) 8x and uplink speed up to 316 Mbps. This downlink speed is above the maximum of 1.2 Gbit / s of 9810, thanks in part to accessories such as 4 × 4 multiple inputs, multiple outputs (MIMO), 256-QAM (modulation of quadrature amplitude) and improved access with licensed support (eLAA) technology.
