Video chat has always been one of the main selling points of Echo Show and Spot. But so far, the products were linked to Amazon's software. This week, however, the company has taken another important step in its relationship with Microsoft by adding Skype calls.
Now, just about every Echo device, past and present, can make calls via the popular platform. Your Echo / Plus / Dot, et al. will be able to do it by voice using a command such as "Alexa Skype Mom". Screen echoes, on the other hand, will provide a complete video experience on Skype. Users can also ask Alexa to dial a phone number via Skype.
It's a solid partnership for both companies. Amazon could use better chat support and Microsoft has not made much progress with Cortana enabled devices. This is also a blow to Facebook, whose portal features rely almost entirely on the idea of offering a standalone home product for video chat. It's the best and virtually the only application that kills Facebook's offer right now.
The feature can be configured via the Alexa mobile application.
