The biggest "moment of worry" of Google I / O earlier this year was the revelation of Google Duplex. The feature immediately impressed the crowd and raised tons of intriguing questions. It is finally starting to be deployed, at least for pixel owners in some cities.

Google confirmed this week to VentureBeat this duplex is starting to be distributed to users in "certain cities" in the United States. The company did not say exactly which cities would offer this feature, but it's a safe bet that the previously revealed "pilot metro stations," such as New York, San Francisco, Atlanta and Phoenix, will be included. Despite the geographic restriction, Google Duplex is only deployed for a "small group" of Pixel owners in these areas.
The duplex in this form is still not what we saw at the entrance / exit. This is a limited version that can only make restaurant reservations, not haircuts or other types of appointments as the company initially showed. However, this version is not limited to companies that have partnered with Google, as was the case in previous tests. A Google spokesperson explains:
We are strengthening the ability to book restaurant reservations over the phone via Google Assistant with Duplex technology. To help provide a good experience for Pixel users and businesses, we start with slow deployment … and we will extend our experience to more Pixel users as we grow.
Since a VentureBeat Reporter was in the qualifications to test Google Duplex, we also have some examples of how it works for end users. In the first video below, we can see the process needed to make a call with Duplex. With Google Assistant, the user can select a location in which they want to make a reservation. From there, details such as time, number of people and other details are requested by the assistant.
The whole process takes a little more than a minute. Personally, it seems a little long, because to call oneself would take about the same time. However, in a later example of the same user, we can see that the reservation request is configured late at night after the closure of the location and that Google indicates that it will call the next day. This seems really useful.
In another brief video, VentureBeat was able to work with a nearby restaurant, which allowed them to record Duplex's call with the restaurant. The voice, just like I / O, has a scary human sound, but we hear a brief warning at the beginning of the call. Duplex indicates that it calls "from Google" and that the "can be registered" call. It's also pretty impressive that Google can accurately handle everything that's stressed.
In addition, this convenient time also shows the Duplex reservation management user interface. It seems that in the wizard, users can see their bookings made with Google Duplex. In addition to this, they can cancel a reservation attempt from this user interface. Notably, however, Duplex will not be able to re-attempt a call at the same location multiple times in the same day.
We are still not up to the moment when Google Duplex hits consumers on a massive scale, but until now, the technology still seems incredibly powerful and useful. We will have to see how things evolve over time.
