The Summer Games are making quick returns for their eighth grade today with speed performance across a number of classics, starting with Banjoe-Tooie.
SGDQ is one of my favorite ways to start the season and it's always a great distraction from the summer season and the quiet exit program. Based on the DoubleTree Hilton in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the event features speedrunners of all the different games showcasing their skills and in-depth knowledge of games ranging from classics to obscure ones with the goal of raising funds for Médecins Sans Frontières.

While the action begins today on the N64 with the Rare Platform Suite at 1:00 pm EST, it will also feature novelties like that of Joakim Sandberg. iconoclasts, an independent game released this year that mixes Metroid with Metal Slug. The SGDQ 2018 will then continue all week until the end of the morning of next Sunday, with a speedrun of Final Fantasy VI. There is a lot to hope for during this time, including the new indie platform favorite Celestial early Thursday and The legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time saturday but what I'm probably most excited about is the big block of Metroid Tuesday evening culminating in a 100% completion of the map of Super Metroid, a game that was obviously missing from the last marathon.
If you're a newcomer in this race, the most important thing about SGDQ is that every playthrough includes interesting comments on the game in question and explanations of what speedrunners do to take advantage of the strategies and weird problems they have been listening to play so fast.
