The Microsoft Surface USB-C dongle from Microsoft will be available to business customers later this week. A spokesman for Microsoft tells The edge The price of the dongle is $ 79.99 for commercial users, and it will be available through the usual corporate purchasing channels on June 29th. The dongle plugs into new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices and provides USB-C support for accessories.
Microsoft's existing range of Surface Pro and Surface devices currently do not support USB-C, and only the Surface Book 2 has the corresponding connector. The Microsoft USB-C drive will be inserted into the charging port of the Surface Connector on existing devices, allowing surface users to connect USB-C devices or charge from a USB-C charger. Microsoft first unveiled the dongle more than a year ago, and Panos Panay, Surface's chief, joked that the connector is a dongle for "people who love dongles".
The connector itself is rather large, with dimensions similar to a standard surface charger. Microsoft claims that "the output and data rate capabilities depend on the USB-C docking solution used" and that the adapter will require an external power supply of minimal power 27 and 12 V to power the screens and the laptop. The Microsoft USB-C adapter will only work with the latest models of Surface Pro and Surface laptops.
Microsoft does not reveal exactly when the USB-C dongle will be available in retail stores and sold directly to consumers. Either way, it is likely that everyone will be able to buy the connector when it launches on Friday. Microsoft has already limited Surface Pro LTE to commercial channels before, but everyone could simply buy it in Microsoft's online store.
