Mozilla has announced a new security tool for users of its Firefox web browser. Called Firefox Monitor, the website allows visitors to check if their accounts have been included in known data breaches and the types of data exposed in each violation.
The security tool is the result of a partnership between Mozilla and HaveIBeenPwned.com (HIBP), a site set up by security researcher Troy Hunt that includes a database of e-mail addresses. -mail that have been compromised in data breaches.
Through this partnership, Firefox is able to verify email addresses against the HIBP database via an anonymized data sharing method (all details can be found in Troy Hunt's blog). The new tool builds on Firefox's existing HIBP integration, which tells users if a site they're visiting has already been exposed in a data breach.
In February, the 1Password password management application announced its own partnership with HIBP, which allows users to verify that their passwords have not been disclosed online. Since then, AgileBits developers have integrated the Pwned Passwords database list into its 1Password desktop applications. As of today, users can also search for HIBP directly from 1Password via the Watchtower feature in the web version of the product.
Mozilla says it's going to start testing the new integration between HIBP and Firefox to make the violation data searchable in the coming weeks.
