At its I / O developer conference last month, Google preview of a major update of Google Maps that promised to bring personalized restaurant recommendations and more to the company mapping tool. Today, many of these new features have begun to be deployed among Google Maps users.

The basic experience of Google Maps to get the directions has not changed, of course, but the app now has a new tab "explore" that allows you to view the map. find out more about what's going on around you, as well as a "for you" tab that provides you with recommendations for restaurants, lists of places to come, and the ability to "track" neighborhoods and get updates when there are new restaurants and cafes that you would probably like. The main difference between the Explore and For You tabs is that the first is to give you recommendations for the moment, while the second is more about planning and keeping an eye on a long term domain.

While most other features are deployed to all users around the world, the new "For You" tab and its content are only available in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. in Japan for the moment. The content of this tab is still a bit limited, but Google promises that it will increase content during this week.

The two new tabs offer many new features. There is the "Gourmet List", for example, which shows you the hottest new restaurants in a region. And if you feel complete, Google will keep track of one of those places where you have been and those you still have to visit. As in the past, the Explore tab also offers lists of good places for lunch, with kids or for a romantic dinner. It's not just food and coffee (or tea), however, these lists also include other activities and Google Maps can now also highlight local events.

With this launch, Google also publishes its new "Your Match" scores, which give a rating to each restaurant or bar, based on your previous choices and ratings. The idea here is that even though overall assessments are often useful, your individual taste often differs from the masses. With this new score, Google tries to take it into account. To improve these recommendations, you can now explicitly tell Maps which cuisines and restaurants you like.

It should be noted that there are still some features promised by Google when I / O that are not part of this version. For example, group planning, which allows you to create a list of potential meeting points and allows your friends to vote on them, is not part of this release.

The update of Google Maps for iOS and Android is now available in the Play Store and the App Store.
