Android users are finally starting to realize how much they are left behind in the updates. Tired of iPhone owners who are celebrating each year 's major iOS updates, they have begun to raise their voices and, thankfully, some OEMs are starting to worry about them. Huawei recently promised to release updates every two months. Now, OnePlus is making a similar commitment but has even more details to share. And, at least on the surface, everything is fine.
All OnePlus phones will have two years of "regular software maintenance" from their release date. This includes new features, new versions of Android and Android security patches. Unlike Google, Essential and HMD, releases will be bi-monthly, not monthly. Better late than never, right?
But wait, there is more! Upon completion of this two-year period, OnePlus will continue to provide Software Security Maintenance updates for an additional year. This only includes Android security patches and is re-released every two months. These ranges actually reflect the same policy that Google uses for its Nexus and Pixel phones (with the exception of Pixel 2).
This schedule takes effect now, but unfortunately, OnePlus does not reset the counter. This means that the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, both launched in 2016, will receive their latest regular software maintenance in November of this year and will then begin their last bi-weekly security update milestone. No specific timing has been given for the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T
This is definitely good news and shows once again how OnePlus will do all it takes to stand out status quo. That said, we still have to see how they will perform in practice in the months to come.
