Samsung seems ready to launch the Galaxy X, the foldable screen smartphone. Samsung's plans to launch a collapsible smartphone have been prevalent for years, and the company has confirmed that it had planned to launch it in 2018. While the tech world is anticipating a collapsible Samsung smartphone for a long time, the South Korean giant is now ready for mass production of foldable OLED panels. While a new report from South Korea claims to reveal Samsung Display's plans, it does not indicate the exact device where the OLED panels will be used. However, the rumor factories suggest that they could be used in the next Galaxy X, which should be launched next year.
According to an ETNews report, sources have claimed that Samsung Display is finally preparing for mass production of foldable OLED displays, with the aim of providing the folding phone next year. Of course, these billboards will be different from those of the Galaxy S9 and the iPhone X. They will actually be foldable, which will allow users to fold a smartphone. While the so-called Samsung Galaxy X is expected to be launched in 2019, mass production of foldable displays will begin in time for that, says the report.
Samsung is expected to begin trial production of its OLED collapsible panels for the Galaxy X this summer. The latest report also claims that the folding mechanism for the Galaxy X has yet to be locked. According to most of the patent previously seen, the new smartphone is seen to bend in half. However, in such a case, users will have to unfold the device for even smaller work such as checking the time. Therefore, it has been claimed that the Galaxy X screen can only bend to two-thirds to leave the top exposed for information such as time, notifications, battery percentage, among others. Notably, the size of the panel is supposed to be 7 inches when it is unfolded.
A pilot production line for Samsung's foldable OLED display in South Korea is expected to begin during the summer. After sorting out the issues that arise on the pilot line, Samsung will begin serial production of the foldable panel by the end of 2018. While the initial production capacity could be 1,00,000 units, Samsung plans to manufacture one million units of OLED foldable display by 2019.
Previous reports had suggested that Samsung plans to show the prototype of its new development to US and European mobile carriers in private meetings during CES 2019 in Las Vegas. However, the device is expected to debut as Galaxy X at MWC next year. It is also reported that Samsung is anxious to save the title "world's first" by launching the foldable smartphone ahead of the competition. Nevertheless, companies like Apple, Huawei, Motorola and ZTE are also working on similar developments that we could see after the arrival of the Samsung model. In addition, Samsung is expected to bring unique hardware with a price as high as KRW 2 million (about Rs 1,25,000).
