Three years ago, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing took his company out of the high-end smartphones battlefield saying there were "too many Chinese sellers", some of them "irrational". and continues to see – Chinese brands are pushing prices of smartphones lower and lower to gain an advantage.
This price war continues to last three years. In fact, it can be more irrational than ever.
I recently reviewed Samsung's hugely popular Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and although I really liked the phone (so much so that I bought one for my personal use), I was I had a hard time giving him the same commendation way. The reason is that the same month that Note 9 arrived on the market, Xiaomi announced a budget device under its new Poco sub-brand with most internal components, at nearly a quarter of the price. This Snapdragon 845 processor; large 4000 mAh battery; and the interior of liquid cooling for the (slightly) improved thermals that underline the note 9 are all found in the first version of Poco, the F1 (or more commonly known as Pocophone).
So, of course, the first thing I did when I received my Pocophone test report, was to compare it to my new upscale variant, $ 1,250. Note 9 as they have the same processor, I did not expect it to be faster (especially since my Note 9 has 8 GB of RAM for the 6 GB Pocophone). In fact, the Pocophone greatly outperforms the note 9 in terms of download speed and download. It can even somehow follow the photograph, provided it is during the day.
The first test I did was a basic speed test, loading a series of applications such as Facebook, Instagram, camera and loading web pages to sites that I had never had before. previously visited. The pocophone finished a fraction of a second in front of note 9 about every time. I then tested the connection speed by launching a performance test via the Speedtest application and performing a real test in which I downloaded a large game (PUBG Mobile). In both tests, the Pocophone beat the note 9 significantly – the Pocophone finished downloading and installing PUBG a minute before the note 9. Check out the screenshots and the video below to see what I mean.
I've also launched both phones on PC Mark and Geekbench reference apps, and the pocophone has also won both.
I understand that the reference numbers are not the end in itself, whether to determine which phone is the most powerful, but when you consider that a phone costs four times as much, it's a bit shocking.
The biggest surprise however was the camera tests. I expected Note 9 to completely outperform the Pocophone here, but this is only the case in low light and video recording situations. During the day, the shots are close enough that you have to paint in pixels to see the difference.
At night or in low light conditions, you can see the superiority of the Note 9 camera.
And of course, note 9 has OIS and EIS, so the videos are much more fluid. BFor $ 300, the pocophone photos are really good.
In terms of battery life, it was not surprising that 4000 mAh went further on the Pocophone than Note 9, given Xiaomi's history.
Now, of course, I'm not saying that the Pocophone is a better smartphone than the Galaxy Note 9. Note 9 has a much more premium build quality, higher resolution and brighter display, and additional features such as waterproofing and wireless charging. In addition, there is this stylus for the 3% of consumers who really need it. For all those who love gadgets and have disposable income, they always prefer to buy the Galaxy Note 9.
But for a $ 300 phone, a flat phone beat a $ 1,250 phone both in the real world and in speed and connection tests, and produced 90% daytime and 70% nighttime photos? I think back to the value proposition. Someone like me will opt for the most powerful phone every time, regardless of its price; but for the average person? For example, my mother who only uses a phone to check Facebook and send WhatsApp messages? How can she justify the purchase of a device other than Chinese?
With Note 9, Samsung has designed a very good phone, which is the culmination of a three-year design cycle that has evolved and perfected through many trial and error. Samsung should set the price of the note 9 in the top bracket of the price of the iPhone. But the irrational strategy – and the speed of China – Chinese brands have sidelined the entire Android business pricing model.
