Samsung's SmartThings Tracker uses LTE to find your lost items

Samsung launches a SmartThings tracker powered by LTE-M (instead of Bluetooth) to help you find stuff. The cellular network allows it to be used for real-time location tracking for your pets and kids, as well as for misplaced items. When you double-tap the tracker's power button, it will be sent via the SmartThings app and you will also be able to send an SOS message.

The tracker is compatible with other Samsung SmartThings devices and can therefore be used with other smart home products, such as lights, thermostats and security cameras. For example, you can use the follower as the arrival sensor, which will trigger the lights on when the device is in range. You can also use it for geofencing areas that will automatically alert you when the tracker comes in and out. The tracker is water resistant for indoor and outdoor use, and the battery can last up to a week on a single charge.

The idea behind Samsung's SmartThings Tracker is similar to the Bluetooth trackers in your portfolio and the keys we've seen from companies like Tile and Chipolo. However, these Bluetooth trackers, although cheaper and smaller, have limited ranges that stop at about 200 feet or rely on the crowd's GPS to find missing or stolen objects that have exceeded this range. The SmartThings Tracker is based on an LTE-M connection, a low-power network designed specifically for IoT devices. It is therefore not limited by its scope. And even though a smartphone may be a way to monitor your kids' location, storing them on their backpacks, for example, can give you a better idea of ​​sending them an SOS.

All of this comes with a low price: the tracker is available for $ 99 with the AT & T service included for the first year and $ 5 a month (or $ 50 a year) for the AT & T service thereafter. It is available at Samsung.com or AT & T stores starting September 14 and will be available via Verizon later this year.
