The Japanese semiconductor company Renesas, one of the world's largest suppliers of chips for the automotive industry, has bought the US chip company IDT for $ 6.7 billion.
Renesas produces microprocessors and circuits on which power devices and the car are at the heart of its concerns. He is second only to NXP on the offer, and more than half of his income comes from the auto. IDT, meanwhile, includes power management and memory among its products, which focus on wireless networks and data conversion and storage. These are two areas of growing importance with the growth of connected devices and particularly vehicles that require high levels of data transmission and interaction.
The acquisition of IDT – which represents 29.5% of the share price – should enable Renesas to increase its expertise in autonomous vehicles. The company said it would also expand its activities in the "data economy" space, such as robotics, data centers and other types of connected devices.
Renesas has already demonstrated autonomous automotive technology, which puts it in direct competition with Intel's tastes . Last year, the company paid $ 3.2 billion to buy Intersil, which is developing battery voltage monitoring technology in hybrid and electric vehicles.
"There is little overlap between their product portfolios, so it's a good choice for Renesas. But it seems the price is a little high, "said Masahiro Wakasugi, an analyst at Bloomberg.
The IDT deal has been on the table for a few weeks after Renesas revealed its interest in an acquisition last month. It is expected to close in the first half of 2019 as a result of the relevant approvals.
