Sonos speakers have become more and more intelligent over the years, but as the company's main focus is music without helping you add items to your shopping list, they do not really compete with the Smart speakers such as Amazon's Alexa speakers or Google Home. That's still the case, but Sonos speakers can now integrate much better thanks to the integration with IFTTT (If This Then That), recently announced by Sonos.
This new IFTTT integration is part of the "Works with Sonos" partnership program, presented earlier this year, integrating integration with Onkyo, Integra, Pioneer and Pioneer Elite receivers. Last month, Sonos opened the program to third-party developers, and IFTTT quickly took over, taking advantage of the Sonos Sound Platform platform, the new built-in API last week. The integration is still in beta, but brings new fun and useful features for integrating your Sonos speakers into your smart home.
New IFTTT actions include convenient ways to start and stop reading, such as starting your song system when you go home or stop when you leave the house. You can also use IFTTT to pause audio playback when answering the phone, convenient when you need to take an important call and you do not want to feel like partying. Likewise, you use IFTTT to automatically reduce the volume of your music when someone rings the doorbell if you use a Ring Bell or SkyBell.
Other actions include stopping music playback when your Uber arrives home, allowing neighbors to pause while telling you that your ride has arrived. Some might even help protect you and your family, like stopping any music if your Nest Protect smoke detector detects an emergency.
These are just predefined actions. You can also create your own IFTTT recipes, but since you're limited to IFTTT actions, you can not control your smart devices with your Sonos system.
