For years, OnePlus has been touting its commitment to keeping the 3.5mm headphone jack on its phones while other vendors have chosen to eliminate it and force users to use the wireless or use an adapter. All that bragging could end up biting OnePlus on the back, as co-founder Carl Pei confirmed in an interview with TechRadar this week, the next phone OnePlus will follow the footsteps of Apple and lose the headphone jack.
"When we launched OnePlus, we strived to create the best smartphone possible, but creating a quality phone does not mean putting all the components available in the device," Pei said. "You need to make decisions that optimize the user experience and understand that things that add value to the user can sometimes add friction."
"We also had to think about the negative side [of removing the headphone jack] for our users, "added Pei. "We found that 59% of our community already had wireless headsets earlier this year – and that was before we launched our Bullets wireless headsets. If we had to [remove the jack] Two years ago, the percentage [of wireless headphones owners] would have been much lower and this would have caused a lot of friction to our users.
Pei understands how controversial this decision is, claiming that it's the right time and that more users will benefit from removing the headphone jack than it will suffer at this point. In addition, by removing a component, OnePlus opens the door to "new technology", including improved battery life (although it has not specified how this will be achieved). The lack of jack also gives way to a fingerprint sensor in display, which appeared during recent leaks.
It should be noted that Pei has never specifically referred to the "new OnePlus handset" as the OnePlus 6T, but all indications are that it will be the next OnePlus device. Pei also noted that a new USB-C adapter to 3.5mm will be included in the box, and that the Bullets V2 wired headset will have a USB-C connector.
