Apple has selected LG Display as the second supplier of OLED panels for iPhone screens, following a series of successful quality tests, said a report Friday.
LG is currently preparing mass production via two of the lines at its E6 plant, which has recently emerged from tests itself, according to sources Korean Herald. The publication did not specify when the first deliveries could take place.
Until now, Samsung was Apple's exclusive OLED provider for iPhones because no other company had the ability to support the application. Samsung has been using OLED in their own phones for years, especially in the Galaxy S and Note lines.
Several reports said that Apple was planning to touch LG, which also manufactures OLED displays for Apple Watch. Apple, however, has strict quality requirements for suppliers, and LG has also had to build its capacity to become a realistic option for iPhones.
Samsung will probably remain the main supplier for a while. According to a report released in July, LG's initial order would be 3 to 4 million panels.
Nevertheless, LG could help reduce the constraints on the supply chain and control the price of iPhones. The 5.8-inch OLED panel on the iPhone X would cost Apple about $ 110, making it the most expensive component of the device and contributing a price of $ 999. The iPhone XS, now in pre-order, costs the same price with a screen of similar size, and the company has added the XS Max 6.5 inches, starting at $ 1,099. Despite the use of a 6.1-inch screen, the iPhone XR-based LCD display costs $ 749.
