OnePlus ignores its own user query, removes the headphone jack on OnePlus 6T

OnePlus is working on a OnePlus 6 follow-up, the OnePlus 6T. The latest smartphone of the company should be launched in October. Until then, we receive a slow and continuous flow of information on the device. The latest news is not so big. The company revealed that it was emptying the headphone jack of the OnePlus 6T.

In an interview with TechRadar, Carl Pei, CEO of OnePlus, confirmed that the "next OnePlus handset" would not be equipped with a universal and universally compatible audio jack. "By removing the jack, we released more space, which allowed us to add new technologies to the product," Pei told TechRadar. "One of the great things is something our users have asked us: improved autonomy."

Seeing another company removing the headphone jack from its devices is certainly disappointing. For OnePlus, it's a new step that comes close to the OnePlus 6 strategy: remove the features that make the phone unique. Compared to the OnePlus 5T, one of our favorite devices from last year, a lot has changed for this year's edition. The company went from a metal device with thin glasses and a headphone jack to a fragile glass device, yet another notch design, and now no headphone jack.

What's crazy is that the company knows exactly how much his customers do not want that. Before the OnePlus 6T, the company was one of the few to ship a 3.5mm jack in its devices. And on the eve of the launch of OnePlus 6, Pei ran a survey on Twitter asking his subscribers how much they appreciated a headphone jack. The results were overwhelming.

An overwhelming majority of 88% of the 19,000 participants said they wanted the headphone jack. Of course, this was done to promote the OnePlus 6, which had a headphone jack, but at some point in the last six months, OnePlus decided that this return was not important. The supposed compromise is a longer battery life, which is certainly something we will test when the OnePlus 6T comes out.

Now that using a pair of normal headphones is much more annoying (you'll have to wear a dongle), OnePlus probably hopes you'll take a pair of its new Bluetooth headphones, or maybe you'd be interested in the new one . Wired USB-C headset that is also on the way.

Although the lack of headphone jack is disappointing, at least the rest of the OnePlus 6T seems interesting. OnePlus belongs to Oppo, and OnePlus devices are usually based on an existing Oppo design. Rumor has it that the OnePlus 6T will be based on the Oppo R17, which has a single teardrop-shaped camera cutout instead of the annoying X-style iPhone slot that everyone uses. When all you put in the notch is a front camera, it turns out that it can be really small. These rumors are further supported by leaks of photos from the OnePlus 6T packaging, which shows an outline of the phone that looks like the R17. OnePlus also confirmed that the device will have a built-in fingerprint reader on the screen.
