OnePlus is known for making powerful Android smartphones and selling them for hundreds of dollars less than similar devices, but its activities are not limited to the mobile world. Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, said the company is moving towards smart TVs. He does not manufacture a box like Nvidia or Xiaomi, because he wants to offer a refined and fully integrated experience.
In an article posted on the company's forums, Lau said the OnePlus TV would aim for unmatched image quality, design and audio quality. He repeatedly refers to the company's first smartphone, the OnePlus One. Presumably, this suggests the strategy of offering something similar to the competition at a lower price.
In phones, OnePlus has started with a very low price and controlled costs with an invitation system. Over time, he conquered fans and gradually increased the price with each new phone. TVs could prove more difficult. The cost of TVs has gone down in recent years – you can now get a 4K set for under $ 1,000. So, there is not much room for OnePlus to sneak into the big names.
OnePlus did not publish the official television details, but Lau dropped some information during an interview with PCMag. It will be a 4K set with LED display technology, which will reduce prices, but will not have the "wow factor" of new OLED games. Lau will not reveal the details of the manufacturing, but she does at least some of the work internally. The company will use its own image processing chips and algorithms, but it will have to buy LCD panels from a third party.
OnePlus will use a well-established Smart TV operating system. Android TV seems to be a strong possibility.
Pau describes television as a smart home appliance in the first place – a hub for all your other devices. He will also have distant microphones to help him answer the requests of a digital assistant. There will also be some kind of smartphone integration. Everything is vague because OnePlus did not announce the operating system used. Lau confirms that OnePlus does not build its own platform but rather works with a "traditional big supplier". This leaves only a lot of possibilities, including Google's Android TV and Roku. However, the angle of the smart home and the virtual assistant are more Google-oriented than Roku.
