Apple's iPhone XS event, though planned, may have disappointed some Apple fans. Especially those who were waiting more than a new iPhone or a new Apple Watch. Especially those who wanted a new iPad Pro. It may be too early to give up hope, as new clues arise to indicate this, probably even next month. But better yet, the new iPad Pro might not be as bad as some would have thought.
On the one hand, it was not totally unexpected that Apple devotes its stage time to the three new iPhones and the Apple Watch Series 4. These alone were already taking a lot of time. In fact, even the possibility of new iPads, especially iPads, was not so safe. The signs indicate that they exist, but there has always been talk of when.
If iOS 12.1, which has just landed in beta, is an indication, the answer is "this autumn". 9to5Mac dug into a code to reveal the reference to an "iPad2018Fall" in the application Settings. The "Memoji sync" feature of iOS 12.1 "also confirms" that this iPad would have a TrueDepth camera for Memojis and, of course, the face ID.
Of course, this was already planned, but we also thought that the camera would force the iPad Pro to adopt a portrait orientation. This is not the case, says developer Steve Troughton-Smith. His analysis of iOS 12.1 reveals support for landscape orientation for Face ID, at least for iPad only. This could mean that Apple has not moved the location of the iPad camera after all. More interesting is the theory that the iPad Pro would have a USB-C port rather than a traditional Lightning port, again evoked by iOS 12.1.
This could have made the next iPad Pro even more tempting for those who may have been on the fence due to the forced portrait orientation. There is more to wait if Apple will launch a new iPad this year. If the fall launch is on track, we could consider an announcement in October for what could be the biggest change to the iPad line since the iPad Pro in 2015.
