This Red Dead Redemption 2 will dominate the world of video games this fall feels like a run conclusion. Whether it matches or not with the perpetual Call of Duty favorite, it's a question, but it's certain that everything else will be out of the water. For many, however, what comes next is the interesting part: can Red Dead Redemption 2 to dominate 2019 too? What about 2020? For that, everything depends on Red Dead Online.
Red Dead Online is the multiplayer component of the solo game that is Red Dead Redemption 2, and Rockstar just announced that it would arrive at a public beta on a date not specified in Novemeber, after the main versions of the game. Rockstar also warned the first players that there would be future technical challenges. Here is an email from the developer:
Red Dead Online is expected to be launched in November 2018, initially in the form of a public beta. As with most online experiences of this size and size, there will inevitably be turbulence at launch. We look forward to working with our incredible and dedicated community to share ideas, help solve youth issues and work with us to develop Red Dead Online into something really fun and innovative.
This is similar to what Rockstar did with GTA Online, which was also launched soon after GTA 5 and billed as a separate game included with the purchase of a solo title. GTA online started with a month or two of problems with the server, but to say that it exceeded these first problems would be a euphemism. GTA online GTA 5 has become the most profitable entertainment product of all time by one estimate.
I'll go ahead and guess that the success of GTA online has something to do with the inclusion of an online mode for Red Dead Redemption 2. I do not think anyone waits Red Dead Online correspond GTA online–GTA is a much more recognizable name than Red Dead Redemption, and the anarchic context of modern times offers enormous room for maneuver with respect to rockets and others. Red Dead Redemption is a more serious franchise and rocket horses are a little less likely. Not impossible, just less likely.
Yet this is what investors will watch in the fall, perhaps even more than the basic game. If Rockstar can get another golden goose, she will be even more beautiful than she is right now.
