At the Tokyo Game Show this year, Sony has announced that it will stop production of the PS Vita handheld console in Japan next year. Currently, Japan is the only market whose final production is confirmed, although other production lines will probably be closed. Especially considering that the American and European divisions of Sony have already announced that the production of Vita physical games should end on March 31, 2019.

The news was shared by the company during the Tokyo Game Show and picked up by the news aggregator Gematsu.

Of Gematsu:

The PS Vita will be manufactured until 2019 in Japan and there is currently no successor project, said Hiroyuki Oda, senior vice president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, at the Tokyo Game Show 2018.

"Currently, we have no plans for a new portable device," said Oda. "In Japan, we will be producing the PlayStation Vita until 2019. From there, the delivery will end."

In addition, Oda has confirmed that the 20 titles of the new PlayStation Classic differ between Japan and the West. (All currently announced titles are shared, though.) Oda said that each title is carefully selected because it is very popular, has a lot of fans and is representative of PlayStation.

Sony has not announced a new portable console, any more than the company seems to do. Seven years have passed since the initial launch of PS Vita in the fall of 2011.

As Engadget points out:

It is unclear whether Sony plans to continue manufacturing the device for other countries. But as Japan is its biggest market and other Asian countries are only selling Japanese imports, we will probably have to say goodbye to the console in the near future.
