Earlier this month, when I wrote about what was left to learn about the Nintendo Switch Online service, I guessed we might already know everything that was going to happen on launch day . The only missing detail was the exact launch date. And soon after, we learned the launch date of September 18, but essentially nothing new, to the Nintendo Direct.
Nintendo Switch Online is now here. People can now pay Nintendo 20 dollars a year (or something else depending on their preferred price level) for the privilege of subscribing. Although my thoughts may change after further use of the evolving service, its main details were already so well known that what you theoretically thought is probably what you think in practice.
For me, the most valuable part of the subscription, the part that should just be free, is the digital insurance which consists of backups in cloud mode. I now have the peace of mind of knowing that my hundreds of hours of progress across different games will not be lost if a third-party dock suddenly tinkers with my system.
There has been a lot of drama about some online games that do not support cloud backups for anti-cheat reasons, games like Splatoon 2 and Dark souls, but the vast majority of games are compatible. Backups occur automatically after playing a game, but you will want to perform an initial manual backup. This will not take long because most backup files contain only a handful of megabytes. Having backups and purchases linked to an account rather than hardware also makes it easier to move games between systems. You can even share games with a friend if they allow you and do not play the same game at the same time.
The other big selling point for me at least is the virtual pseudo-console service. It's cool to launch the NES app and there are only 20 classic games left to launch. Games like Super Mario Bros. 3, River City Ransom, THE legend of Zelda, and Tecmo Bowl are great experiences to have wherever you are. It's even easy to enter the Japanese Famicom library with a separate account.
It's hard to excite the old NES games in 2018, and weekly online registration is a boring and understandable necessity. But online gaming is neat when connections are stable. And just the interface to select games and create restore points is super slippery. This could be a really great emulation framework if more games from multiple consoles are added regularly. It's also worth adding other button remapping options, unless the clumsy default layout is Nintendo's attempt to sell more conventional controllers.
Of course, paying for Nintendo Switch Online is now the only way to play a bunch of Switch online games. Some games are exempt, like the free Fortnite and the Jackbox Party Pack services. But jump Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, etc. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate you will have to pay as on other systems. However, unlike other systems, you should always use the silly mobile app for voice chat, which now works at least with other online games such as: ARMS and Mario Tennis Aces. But it's still stupid.
That's really it. If it 's a brief comment, it' s because Nintendo Switch Online is still running out of things to do. I have not received a membership discount yet and the NES games are not updated until next month. All in all, I'm just neutral on the service. The $ 20 a year is nothing that I can afford without thinking or getting angry. But I'm happy either. It's simply an obligation, an obligation that less active Nintendo Switch owners certainly do not have. There is the basics of great service here so Nintendo is quickly expanding the retro gaming library and giving up this stupid mobile app. But for now, Nintendo Switch Online is not terrible. It's just me.
