Looking back on another week of Cupertino news, Apple's Loop this week includes the first reviews of the iPhone XS and XS Max, the differences between the old iPhone X and the new handsets, sneaky prices from Apple, the tips for iOS 12, the Apple Watch, the MacBook stock levels and the memories of the Infinite loop of Apple.
Apple Loop is here to remind you of some of the many discussions that have been taking place around Apple over the past seven days (and you can read my weekly summary of the news on Android here on Forbes).
Review reviews of the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max
Preliminary versions of Apple's new iPhone XS and iPhone XS handsets were released this week (and Apple has been very vocal about the publications it was able to access by bundling them in a press release). The general consensus seems to be that camera technology is a significant improvement, the performance is rising, but unless the imaging is critical, better wait for the XR details of the iPhone and critics. real happen before making a decision:
Of course, the iPhone XR, smaller and cheaper, hides on the horizon. This brings a lot of the same technology with a reduced sticker price of $ 250. This is partly due to the use of an LCD screen compared to an OLED display, but the noticeable difference is the camera. If that's not the list of features, you can wait, suggests Brian Chen at The New York Times:
"Apple did not provide a review team for the XR because it will be released next month, so I can not say it with authority.
"But I think that will largely depend on whether you can live with a single-lens camera, which means you can not take digital SLR-like photos with blurred backgrounds and sharp foregrounds. about $ 250 more than the XR.

What is the difference between all these new iPhones?
In terms of physical size, the X and XS have the same dimensions (and the XS Max is on a par with the iPhone 8 Plus), but there are some practical changes under the hood, like Gordon Kelly note from Forbes:
The first of them is the increase in the resistance to water and dust IP68 compared to the IP67 certification of the iPhone X. You can read the technical details, but you can now immerse your iPhone in three meters of water instead of one.
The next, equally subtle, step is a 25% increase in speaker volume and stereo support – the latter promises to offer clearly audible left and right channels. The iPhone X has amazingly loudspeakers (more than the front-facing, stereo supporting Pixel 2), so this should be a welcome increase for those who like to listen to podcasts on the kitchen counter.
A bigger question is to choose between the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max. There is the difference in physical size, but unlike in previous years, this is the only real difference – for once, smaller and smaller flag-carriers are carrying identical optical equipment. Kelly aligns the two units as part of the competition:
There are two good news with the iPhone XS and XS Max. First, after years of booking its best cameras for its flagship phone, Apple has now granted both XS models equal status. Secondly, Apple has significantly improved its software game, which was essential after the iPhones found themselves far behind the Pixel 2 image processing.
… but probably more exciting, the introduction of what Apple calls "Smart HDR". This combines several photos taken at different shows and combines their best elements into one plan. If that sounds familiar to you, it's because that's how Google's "HDR +" works on the pixel range. One last tip is the ability to adjust the background bokeh (aka blur) on portrait mode shots, which the Samsung Galaxy Series provides.

Apple's sneaky price
Of course, the new iPhones mean that the new handsets will soon be integrated into Apple Genius bars to be repaired. Even though the glass used has been labeled as the most solid ever used, the increase in the price of the flagship handset repairs should facilitate the sale of protective cases (and Apple Care). Gordon Kelly reports:
What Apple has announced is its updated pricing service to cover the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, and the user response has been hostile. While the iPhone XS retains the same exorbitant costs for screen repair ($ 279) and "Other damage" ($ 549) as the iPhone X, these have been increased to 329 $ and $ 599 respectively for the iPhone XS Max.
More here on Forbes, and it's worth remembering that this adds to the rise in battery maintenance prices reported on Apple Loop last week.
Tips and tricks to enjoy iOS 12
Along with the release of the new iPhone models, Apple has made iOS 12 available to all users (Forbes' Amit Chowdhry has more details). The goal is to make things work rather than adding new features, but there are many hidden surprises. Zach Epstein has put together some for the latest list of iOS 12 icons, starting with the battery life:
Each compatible iPhone model will benefit from improved performance once iOS 12 is installed – and remember that every iPhone model compatible with iOS 11 is also compatible with iOS 12. Plus your iPhone is old, the more impact will be spectacular on performance. According to Apple, some older iPhones running iOS 12 will get 70% accelerations when performing key functions. There are also many behind-the-scenes changes and enhancements that will help improve battery life, which is still a hot topic in terms of aging iPhone models.

Make the Nice Apple Watch
And then, there was the launch of the other product – the Apple Watch 4 – and the reaction to this problem was still solid. But I would like to turn to John Gruber's point of view on Apple Watch and explain why the product is so different from other Apple hardware portfolios. In short, this is not the best Apple product:
People love it for what they do, how it works and for how nice they are. Apple Watch is booming, although it is far from the most beautiful watch, because all the more beautiful watches do much less. This is the reverse of the abnormal status of Apple Watch in the history of Apple. Apple's products, especially the new ones, generally do less than their competitors. Apple Watch takes control of the watch industry because it does it very much more than traditional watches.
… Of course, Apple is worried that Apple Watch can not do everything it does and integrates into one of the world's finest watch cases. . At some level, you have to kill them. They win, but they do not just want to win the race. They want to win the race while driving the most beautiful car on the track.

Prepare the space for a new MacBook
The launch event in September focused on the iPhone and Apple Watch, without mention of the update of the iPad or MacBook lines. Cupertino may not update the second line hardware, but another sign suggests the new MacBook is on the way.
Although there is no confirmation from Apple about upcoming events, a number of US retailers have posted significant discounts on existing Mac stocks (see here, here and here for some of them). I can not think why they would seek to eliminate the stock before a potential Apple event in mid-October.
Can you?

And finally…
While Apple moves the Infinite Loop HQ to the Apple Ring, campus memories were collected and repeated by Steve Levy of Wired. As Tim Cook faces the future, these stories are reminiscent of Apple's story, including one that shows that the more the media changes, the more the obsession with "what will follow" continues:
Phil Schiller (SVP Worldwide, 1987 – present): Things were so different, there was no mobile phone, not even Wi-Fi. We have not yet received all our news on the Internet, so the fall of the magazines was a big problem for everybody. Someone was walking around with everyone's postcard magazine and was getting our Macworlds and MacWEEK and was looking at the rumor column on the last page and saying, "Uh, oh, what's gone?"
