Sine Apple CarPlay debuted four years ago, Apple Maps was the only option for navigation. Being able to use Google Maps was the biggest benefit of Android Auto, but now it is. With the release of iOS 12 this week, the long awaited Google Maps support has officially arrived.
Apple Maps has improved over the years and insiders have told us that there is a big overhaul going on, but Google Maps is a far superior navigation app with a better database of the latest listings. Even for those who prefer to stay with Apple Maps, be sure to give Google Maps a preview of CarPlay with the Satellite Maps option.
Getting Google Maps requires an update of the operating system from your iPhone to iOS 12.0. From there, you need to update the Google Maps app from the App Store.
We really like the feel and function of Google Maps, especially the method of selecting destinations and the clear contrast of the white font on a black background. Apple Maps tends to be heavy on light font with clear backgrounds.
Also look for the Waze app (which belongs to Google) to traffic browsing. The CarPlay version is in beta and should come out in the very near future.
